The owners, Ali’ and Stef’, initially got in touch with us to ask if they could us one of our cycling photos on their website and Esther had stayed in touch via email. From those conversations it was clear that we shared a lot in common and so when, a few weeks ago, they got in touch to say they were heading out to stay in the chalet themselves and wondered if we were in the area, we jumped at the chance to go and say hello.
The first thing to say is that BamBam Rocks chalet is right in the middle of one of our favourite parts of the French Pyrenees, the area we have visited more than any other because it is both beautiful and offers a massive amount of cycling climbs and hiking opportunities clustered closely together. Ever since we first visited back in 2014 we have found ourselves drawn back there time and again to marvel at the spectacular scenery on offer here.
Arriving at the chalet, which sits at an altitude of 1600m in a tiny hamlet with only a handful of neighbouring buildings, we could immediately see why they had taken on the project of converting this former hostel into such a magnificent place to stay. The location is just amazing. Sitting just a couple of hundred metres from the main ski-lift, with mountains rising up on three sides and a stupendous view across the Pyrenees completing the picture, it’s hard to imagine a more idyllic location for a mountain retreat.
In terms of the what they have done to renovate the interior, my words will almost certainly be inadequate. Even the pictures on their own website (which are reproduced here) don’t do justice to the size and feeling of space in the main living area and the quality of the finish throughout. Six spacious ensuite bedrooms, a massive kitchen, a boot room and an outdoor terrace with a hot tub complete what is undeniably an incredible place to stay.
However, for us, the main feature of the property we fell in love with was Ali’ and Stef’ themselves. As they told us about the work they had done and the importance they placed on making sure all of their guests had an unforgettable time, even making hand-made gifts which they post to guests after their stay, it was obvious that this project was much more than an investment. It was about making people feel welcome, cared for and relaxed in surroundings that are perfect for unwinding, celebrating with loved ones and appreciating nature.
So, if you’re considering a getaway at any time of the year and are looking for a special place to visit with a large family or group of friends, I warmly recommend BamBam Rocks Chalet as a place to consider.
