On a beautiful sunny day beneath a bright blue sky, and
almost a year since our first visit, today we set out to revisit the impressive summit of El Fraile (the monk) from our base in San Jose. Hiking this time with friends, our route took us from the side of the AL1308 road, just under kilometre north or San Jose, heading along the dusty track leading east towards the mountain. Climbing gently at first the trail soon narrowed into a winding, stony track that entered a narrow gorge. Around an hour after leaving San Jose we emerged onto a small scrubby plateau with the summit in sight but no visible paths ahead either. So, picking our way through the loose scrub as the ascent steepened slightly, hard work in the hot sun, we soon reached a large plateau just below the summit proper. From here it was just a short ascent over some large boulders to our destination. Wow, what an incredible view!
The weather this year was even better than during our hike here last year, with stunning views out to sea and inland stretching for hundreds of kilometres in all directions. I think the pictures say far more than a few words could. In the end we spent over an hour and half enjoying the views and stillness of the mountaintop. We even enjoyed a visit from an especially inquisitive fox.

Not only a wonderful view but also treated to a wonderful sighting of this young fox......
