Hiking From San Jose to La Fabriquilla - Along The Coast And Beaches Of The Cabo de Gata Natural Park

Just a day after our inland cycling expedition from San Jose (in the Cabo de Gata Natural Park) to La Fabriquilla we decided to complete the loop on foot along part of the GR92 hiking trail (which we had cycled the previous year as well). This time setting off west along the coast, past the iconic Playa de los Genoveses and continuing on past the rest of the amazing beaches on this stretch of sea, we then began the gentle climb around the clifftops to reach the lighthouse Torre de la vela Blanca, standing 200m high above the Mediterranean. Although it was a slightly cloudy day the weather remained warm and as soon as we began the climb the views looking back over the natural park were incredible with the ragged contours of the coastline zig-zagging as far as we could see.

After Torre de la vela Blanca we descended down to the equally iconic Faro Cabo de Gata and the rocky outcrops of Las Sirenas at the southernmost point of the park before taking on the final climb and descent to La Fabriquilla (with another great view of the salt flats) arriving in just over 3 hours before enjoying a lift home with friends!

We also had another special treat, when another nearby motorhome traveller started to exercise his 'pet', an awesome bird of prey. It's amazing who you meet travelling in a motorhome!

Hmmm, another interesting rock formation....

Looking back at Faro Cabo de Gata....

Almost there, past goats (we thought the shepherd was a litle mad, but turned out he was on a blue tooth headset) and looking over the Las Salinas salt flats of El Cabo de Gata....

Meeting 'Bonnie' the falcon....

And this little lady as well....

Made it....relaxing overlooking the sea.

Followed by a ride home in Klaus, our friends Hayley and Marcus' motorhome...

  1. See if this works ... I have been reading your blog for quite a while now, but thought I could not post any comments at all. That's why I have kept quiet all that time... So this is a try out ... What a wonderful trip/ life style! I can agree on all the things you have reported o far, especially the post about "being part of different communities"! Really as I view motorhoming too, well, my dream anyway because I am not a "lifetimer" yet, ot whatever you call people on the road!

  2. Thank you so much for your words and getting in touch. It means a lot to us to hear that you have enjoyed our posts and to hear that others out there also feel the same about motorhoming in a community minded way. Once again thank you so so much for getting in touch. It's lovely to hear from you and we hope you and your Belgium Beauty are enjoying your adventures together!
