Autumn Market of Ancient Fruits - Orpierre 2015 - Hautes Alpes - Baronnies Provencales - France

With our love of local, traditional foods and customs we were very excited to find yet another autumn, harvest festival right on our current doorstep in the picturesque village of Orpierre here in the Hautes-Alpes on the fringes of Provence. This was the 13th edition of this annual market celebrating the culture and tradition of ancient fruits and farming practices and with bright blue skies accentuating the autumn colours it was the perfect time of year to be celebrating the tasty, bountiful produce of this fertile region. With dozens of local farmers providing apples, pears, gourds, nuts, root vegetables, wild mushrooms and countless other colourful specimens we'd never find in a UK supermarket alongside dozens more artisan producers of baked goods, tapenades, soaps, herbs, spices it was a great atmosphere for the thousands of visitors.

We were especially interested in the displays of traditional apple pressing, ancient lavender oil distillation process, barrel making and the display of hundreds of different varieties of apples and pears in the town hall.

Here are a few of our photos of the event.....
